Description
Ratchet Made Of Untreated Wood
Small effect and signal instrument made of untreated wood with a penetrating and very loud sound . Well suited for events such as carnivals and weddings, but also football matches and demonstrations where you want to set impressive musical accents.
The ratchet; or Rätsche, Knarre, Schurre, Rappel, Räppel, Grägger, as it is also called; has a long Catholic tradition during Easter in German-speaking countries . Since the suffering of Christ is remembered in silence during this time, the church bells fall silent from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. In order to call the faithful to prayer and remind them of the service, children run through the villages with the so-called Good Friday ratchets and whirl them around noisily. This custom is still practiced in many Catholic communities today.
Wherever the aim is to arouse the interest of the population , the intense sound of the ratchet is and has been used for religious as well as secular purposes. For example, it rattles at the Jewish festival of Purim when the Book of Moses is read. It was used as an alarm instrument by night watchmen to warn sleeping people of danger, while winegrowers used it to keep birds away from vineyards. Even composers such as Mozart, Strauss and Orff used the ratchet in their music.
A versatile effects instrument!
